Sakurai Getsudō (Sakurai Akira) was born July 5, 1898 in Toyohashi City. He studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Abe Chidō and Hanba Kandō, and was part of the Mizuno Rodō lineage. He started teaching in 1935, and was part of the shakuhachi world for more than 50 years. He was the head of the Chikuō-kai.
