Donavon Davidson is a teacher, composer, and published poet originally from Anderson, Indiana. From the time of his youth, he studied guitar and saxophone which led him to obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Music Theory and Composition in 1995 from Ball State University. For several years he composed music and performed in the Midwest and New England. In 2005 he obtained a Master’s degree in Creative Writing from Goddard College and began teaching at The Community College of Vermont. Since then he has published dozens of poems in journals and has had four volumes of poetry published.

Prior to completing his music degree, Donavon happened upon a recording—The Japanese Flute, featuring Kōhachiro Miyata. With only a beginner’s guidebook, he set about trying to teach himself shakuhachi, but quickly realized the importance of finding an instructor.
This passion led him first to Zensabo master Kiku Day in 2018, who set him on his path of study. Donavon came across an article written by Kinko Ryū sōke Kodō Araki VI and was presented with an opportunity to study with him. They developed an excellent rapport and in 2023, after completing his study of the honkyoku repertoire, he was granted his shihan certificate and given the name Shindō. Donavon’s main interest is to preserve and pass on to future generations the Kinko Ryū lineage of the Kodō Araki shakuhachi guild.

Donavon currently lives and teaches shakuhachi in Sweden.
