Véronique PIRON, born in 1961, has a wide artistic background which lead her to shakuhachi in 1992. To start... Flautist, with a passion for the graphic arts, she was initially trained in Strasbourg (East of France) in Claire GENTILHOMME's flute class at the Music Conservatorium, then opened herself to jazz and improvisation at the CEDIM (Center of Education and Development of the Musical Improvisation) with Jean Pierre HERZOG, while leading at the same time fine arts studies at the University of Strasbourg. She performed then in various groups in Alsace (East of France) then in Bretagne (West of France) including the jazz orchestra " Sirius " conducted by the pianist Didier SQUIBAN until 1995 while she starts to teach Flute in a local Conservatorium. Shakuhachi and Japan... Véronique PIRON started learning the shakuhachi in France with the school of the famous master and musician Katsuya YOKOYAMA (1934-2010), first with Yoshikazu IWAMOTO his first disciple. Then, laureate of a “Lavoisier” scholarship from the French Foreign Affairs Ministry between 2000 and 2002, she perfected her learning directly with Katsuya YOKOYAMA and his school, having Teruo FURUYA as main teacher and Michiko ÔNARI as accompanist playing the koto, the shamisen and singing. She also got an initiation of the Jiuta style of singing with the shamisen/koto player Kikuko SÂTO. In a parallel direction, she got introduced to the bamboo tranverse flutes during her stay with Naoko MIYAMARU (from the Gagaku Orchestra Reigakusha) for the ryûteki, and met Kohei NISHIKAWA who introduced her to the shinobue and nohkan and together they started in 2008 a project of collaboration in Europe. Teaching, performing here and there... Based in West of France in Brittany, Véronique Piron teaches the shakuhachi between the area of Rennes and Paris in France, Brussels in Belgium, organises annual workshops, and conducts workshops on Japanese music opened to any instrument, the first one being created in 2004 in the local Conservatorium where she teaches. She works with diverse institutions among which of the music conservatoriums, the network of media libraries and the Museum of Music in the Cité de la Musique in Paris since 2004. Engaged on an European level, she is actively participating in 2006 in the creation of the European Shakuhachi Society (ESS) based in London, as its secretary. She teaches and performs in several Summerschools, and among others she organizes with Jim FRANKLIN in 2007 the 2nd European Shakuhachi Summerschool in Alsace (ESsch), East of France. On stage... Véronique Piron is mainly performing in solo or in duet with various musicians in France and abroad, including koto/shamisen players and shakuhachi players, participates in different events around the shakuhachi including in Japan and in the International Shakuhachi Festivals, like in Tôkyô in 2002 and in Sydney in 2008. She is performing in a traditional and contemporary repertoire but also creative with the shakuhachi and the western tranverse flute. She is presently working on a creative project with the shakuhachi and the pianist Lydia Domancich in Bretagne, and is also preparing a meeting with the music of the Middle-East.
