Shakuhachi
Gotō Kenzan (birth name Kenpei) was born in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture on June 1, 1894. He entered the shakuhachi world in 1922, as a student of Tozan-ryū master Kotake Kazan, becoming a Jun-Shihan (associate master) in February 1927, and at the same time teaching shakuhachi to volunteers within the Ministry of Railways, where he was a full-time engineer. He was the president of Gotō Seisakusho Co., Ltd. and managing director for Nippon Lift Service Co. Ltd. He earned his Shihan (Masters license) in 1933 and his Dai-Shihan (grand Master license) in 1938. Rather than a career as a performer, Kenzan concentrated on teaching and promoting the Tozan-ryū.
