Ichiro Seki studied shakuhachi under Katsuya Yokoyama and composition with Shuko Mizuno and Yoriaki Matsudaira. His professional career commenced with his taking first prize award in composition in the Pan-Music Festival in 1975. Since then he has performed in Europe, the Middle East, South East Asia, and South America. He came to the U.S. first with the TOKK Ensemble in 1978 and, again, with the Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus in 1997. In 1996, he received first prize in the Agency for Cultural Affairs competition for composition.
